INTRO
In this workshop you’ll learn how to take your images
through a professional workflow to highest quality final output. Whether
you need museum-quality prints for a gallery, the best files to send
clients, or even prints to hang in your house, you’re covered.
First off, let’s figure out if you should read any further.
Nobody wants to waste time and money without getting what they want.
Here’s what WON’T happen at this workshop: Jargon-heavy
explanations that leave you confused or feeling condescended to, cutesy
demonstrations of techniques that you’ll never use, a pace that
leaves you bored or left behind.
This course is designed and taught by a working photographer busy
in the commercial and museum/gallery realm. If you want to understand
how to unleash your images’ potential through Adobe Photoshop
and a calibrated working environment, then SIMPLY THE BEST Photoshop
Tutorial training is for you!
WHAT’S COVERED?
First things first: At the start of the training we’ll
print an image of yours that you like using your current skills, then
at the end of the workshop we’ll print the same image again
using all your knowledge. You’ll be amazed at the comparison!
We’ll start at the beginning. Did you know that Photoshop’s
default, out of the box settings are throwing out most of the color
info from your scanned film or digital camera? In other words, if
you don’t set up things properly at the start, you’re
degrading each and every image.
You’ll learn how to adjust color and contrast. Serious photographers
won’t accept ‘pretty close’ when adjusting the colors
and contrast of their images. You’ll learn the best tools and
techniques to get your images the way you want them. If you’re
used to reaching for the Brightness/Contrast tool, you’ll learn
why that tool is so imprecise and destructive to your images.
In a nutshell, you’ll learn:
_. What Photoshop can do for you
_. Getting your images into Photoshop without harming them
_. How to decode the RAW dialog, a powerful but confusing area
_. Which file formats are important to you and how to use them
_. The best tools and techniques for color correction and contrast
control
_. Which Photoshop tools never to touch
_. How to fix imperfections artfully: telephone wires from landscapes,
reducing skin blemishes, or removing logos.
_. How to avoid damaging the info in your files while working
_. The must-know shortcuts
_. How to salvage many over- or under-exposed images
_. How subtle adjustments with Hue / Saturation and Selective Color
can make your prints really pop!
_. What color spaces are and how to use them
_. The infinite power of Layers and Adjustment Layers
_. How to make quick and useful Selections
_. How to make changes to a small area of images, like a face or single
tree trunk
_. How to make quick and useful Masks
_. The ability to undo the worst mistakes, even ones made an hours
ago
_. How to combine two exposures of one scene into a single full-toned
image
_. How to properly use and calibrate your scanner, monitor, and printer
_. The proper way to Dodge and Burn your images (not the Dodge &
Burn tools)
_. How to straighten crooked images or fix perspective distortions
_. How to Automate repetitive tasks by pushing a single button
_. Getting the most from your Black & White images
_. The best way to convert color originals to black and white
_. What editing you should do in color before converting to black
and white
_. Reasons why your monitor doesn’t look consistent, why your
prints don’t match it, and how to fix it
_. When to sharpen and how to do it properly for prints and the web
_. Final preparation steps for the best prints
MY PHILOSOPHY
It’s easy to razzle-dazzle people with tricks and
gimmicks, but to teach students how to use Photoshop so that it works
for them—that should be the ultimate goal. In my workshop, you
won’t learn “tricks,” you’ll learn how to
use these powerful Photoshop techniques to bring your photographic
vision to life.
SIMPLY THE BEST creates a casual atmosphere open to questions and
adjusts the speed and content of the workshop to fit your interests
and skill level—you’ll be doing hands-on work so you have
real practice, not just a mountain of theory. You’ll also receive
a handbook of all the lessons and an accompanying CD including images
so you can review any of the techniques, any time.
WHO NEEDS IT?
Who needs SIMPLY THE BEST Photoshop Tutorial training workshop?
In short, any photographer who wants more control over their images
and prints to harness to the Digital Darkroom. If you’ve never
used Photoshop, but want to—or if you’ve been “playing
with it,” perhaps for years, but don’t really understand
things such as Levels, Curves, Selections, Layers, and Adjustment
Layers—then this is for you. If you want to learn about graphic
design, this course is NOT for you; this course is made by a photographer
for photographers.
SIMPLY THE BEST Photoshop Tutorial workshop is conducted one-on-one
in your location (a home, studio, or office). The whole workshop is
conducted at your computer, and since this is your system—computer,
monitor, printer—you’re ready to go without any delay.
I’ll explain the importance of ICC calibrating your devices
and help you do it so you can maintain a calibrated system for years
after the workshop. You don’t have to worry about the rest of
the class going too slow or leaving you behind—you ARE the whole
class. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be making better prints
than you ever have—and probably also better prints than any
you’ve gotten from custom labs before.
The course comes in two varieties: The Two-Day Tutorial, or the Three-Day
Tutorial. The Two-Day course covers as many of the above techniques
as you can absorb. The pace adjusts for you. And don’t worry,
if we don’t cover everything together, you still have the exercise
manual for when you’re ready to move on. The Three-Day workshop
covers all of the above plus a third day specifically for addressing
questions and problems in your own photos, so you can apply your new
knowledge to real situations that you encounter. The One-Day course
is available only to those in the greater Austin, Texas area and focuses
on the bare essentials. In all three courses you’ll start out
learning techniques on images provided by me; in the end, to help
solidify all the skills, we’ll work together on your own images.
After all, this is about helping you improve your images, right?
For many students this is where the “rubber meets the road.”
They grasp the techniques from the provided images, but their creative
minds fully open once they begin applying the techniques to their
own images and prints.
WHY SIMPLY THE BEST?
Whether you’re a seasoned professional photographer
ready to make the digital plunge, a digital shooter looking for more
control, or a beginner looking to learn it all correctly from the
beginning—then SIMPLY THE BEST Photoshop Tutorial is the training
workshop for you. If you have a background in traditional wet darkroom,
don’t worry, you’ll be learning from someone with 10 years
wet darkroom experience. We can speak the same language. These Photoshop
techniques will enhance and build upon the skills you bring from the
wet darkroom. Also, SIMPLY THE BEST doesn’t take sponsorship
money from any manufacturers, so I’m free to give you my product
opinions without worrying about offending sponsors.
If you’re thinking, “What if I get confused about something
a month from now? No problem, I also provide six full months of free
email support for any questions you may have after the workshop. You
get to learning on your equipment, what you want to learn, with free
support afterward. That’s why SIMPLY THE BEST Photoshop Tutorial
really is simply the best!
